Media Release, 13th October 2008
Cornwall’s circus training charity, Cirque du Ciel, has been awarded £60,000 by the Henry Smith Charity.
The money, which will be spread over the next 3 years, will pay for a dedicated charity manager. Initially a half-time post, the successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the charity, and steering its future development.
Cirque du Ciel was established 5 years ago, having operated originally as the Aerial Puppetry Foundation. Since then the charity as established a reputation for offering children and young people high quality workshops and performance opportunities at local festivals and events.
The charity runs its own Award Scheme to recognise the young people’s achievements, which in turn can signpost them to other forms of accreditation such as Youth Achievement and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
During the past summer Cirque du Ciel has run projects in 6 schools in Penwith and Kerrier, held several one-off workshops at special events and taken part in a number of community festivals and celebrations including Marghasyol Day in Marazion, Lafrowda Day in St Just, Mazey Day in Penzance and Troon Festival.
During the autumn term they are running a skills share project which will bring together students from 3 secondary schools: Cape Cornwall in St Just, Humphry Davy in Penzance, and Camborne. They are also developing a project to work with primary school pupils and their parents.
Trustee Barbara Smith said:
‘Being awarded funding to employ a charity manager is a tremendous step forward for us. It will enable us to develop our work and operate across Cornwall. It’s also a credit to all the people who have given their time, their skill, and their support to help us along a sometimes bumpy road. Now it feels like we’ve reached the tarmac and are ready to gather speed.’
Cirque du Ciel is a registered charity which runs circus skills workshops in West Cornwall, catering for all abilities and covering a wide range of skills.
