Become a member of the Charity?

Members of a charity are the stakeholders - just like shareholders in an equity company. They support the work of the trustees and ensure the charity runs according to its objects.

Members have voting rights at general meetings. This means they approve the accounts, the activity of the charity according to its objects, and can nominate and appoint Trustees. You can find out more about charity membership from the Charity Commission or the Governance Hub.

Members carry limited liability should something go wrong. In Cirque du Ciel's case, the limit is £1 per person. However, in order to cover our administration costs, we currently charge £2 a year for membership.

Members are not the same as ‘friends' who support the charity, usually by raising funds. Friends do not have voting rights. At present, Cirque du Ciel does not have a formal friends' scheme.
